Privacy Policy
Last updated: 23 August 2026
Étude is built so that the thing you care about most — the sound of you playing — never leaves your phone. This page explains exactly what stays, what is sent, and what is never collected at all.
Your recordings stay on your device
Étude never uploads your audio. Every take you record is written to your device's private app storage and stays there. There is no server to send it to: Étude has no backend, no account system and no login.
The same is true of everything derived from your playing — the traces, the piece names you type, the dates and durations. All of it lives in the app's local storage on your phone, and nowhere else.
If you delete the app, that data is deleted with it. You can also delete every recording at any time from Settings → Recordings → Delete all recordings.
What is sent, and why
Two things leave your device, and neither one contains audio, piece names, or anything you have typed.
Anonymous usage events. Étude uses PostHog to count how the app is used, so it can be improved. Exactly eight events are sent, each one a simple counter with no free text:
- a session was recorded, and how long it lasted
- a second session of the same piece was recorded
- a session summary was opened
- an older take was replayed, and how old it was
- two takes were compared, and how far apart they were
- a card was exported, and in which format
- the subscription page was shown
- a purchase was completed
These events are tied to a random identifier generated on your device. They are not linked to your name, your email or your Apple account, and they are not used to track you across other apps or websites. Screen recording and session replay are switched off. PostHog stores this data in the United States.
Purchase status. Étude uses RevenueCat to know whether a subscription is active. It receives an anonymous device identifier and the state of the purchase. It never receives your payment details — those are handled entirely by Apple and are never visible to Étude.
What Étude never collects
- Your audio recordings
- The names of the pieces you play
- Your name, email address or phone number
- Your location
- Your contacts, photos or files
- Any advertising identifier
Étude does not show advertising, does not sell data, and does not share data with advertisers or data brokers.
The microphone
Étude asks for microphone access the first time you press record, and only then. The microphone is used while a take is being recorded and at no other time. You can withdraw the permission at any moment in your device settings; Étude will simply stop being able to record.
Notifications
If you turn on the weekly reminder, it is scheduled on your device. No server is involved and no push token is created or sent anywhere.
Children
Étude is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from them.
Your rights
Because Étude keeps your recordings only on your device, you already hold and control them directly. For the anonymous usage events described above, you can ask for them to be deleted by writing to the address below — include the approximate dates you used the app so they can be located.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top of this page changes with it. Material changes will be announced in the app's release notes.
